I have done vigorous workouts for years. Just recently, I was diagnosed with Anxiety disorder — after visiting the ER with a whole lot of scary feelings/symptoms.
Since that time, I have had issues with feeling like I can’t catch my breath and/or light headedness during certain workouts that are fairly intense. …But although these are tough workouts, they wouldn’t have bothered me like this before.
I welcome any input.

Sounds like you had a panic attack.

Panic attacks are thought to be caused by your mind over-reacting to certain physical stimuli. This can also include situational stimulus like seeing dogs, blood or standing on the edge of a cliff.

In your case, I assume, you are reacting to your body’s signals of physical exertion.

The trick to dealing with these anxiety attacks is convincing yourself that you are going to be ok. (because your mind is telling you that you are not!)

A simple breathing exercise that works wonders is to breath deeply and slowly when you feel the anxiety creeping up. Slowly is the key, if your finger tips begin to go numb you are hyperventilating which will further cause you to panic. (which is often why folks having their first panic attack, me included, end up in the ER thinking they are in serious trouble.)

I have anxiety attacks and sometimes have to go to the hospital for stroke like symptoms.. numbness, tunnel vision, black outs, cold/hot sweat, weakness etc. I finally figured out that it was my anxiety. but the last time it happened I was on bipolar meds and my hubby rushed me to the er because he said my lips were blue. it’s pretty scary. can I die from this if I didn’t have meds for it?

I don’t think it can actually kill you, but it can definitely cause you to pass out. Some of the symptoms you described (tingling, numbness, weakness) are caused by hyperventilation. Your nervous system gets overloaded with stress and you start breathing too fast and you don’t get enough oxygen. (Or maybe it’s too much oxygen, I’m not sure)…but in any case, it throws off the oxygen and C02 balance in your body and so you start feeling dizzy and all kinds of other symptoms. But you also get a sudden adrenaline rush and that causes a "Fight or Flight" response…you feel absolutely terrified. Your brain perceives a threat that actually isn’t there, and it kicks your body into overdrive to try to get ready for a threat. It’s like a false alarm and it doesn’t turn off.

A panic attack is absolutely terrifying. I’ve had problems with depression off and on since I was a kid. I went through a severe depression several years ago, and I’ve been having problems again. But this time, I also have a panic disorder. I had this really weird feeling of "dread" or "doom" like something bad was about to happen. Then I started having panic attacks almost every day. It’s horrible…you feel like you’re going crazy, and you feel like you’re becoming "disconnected" from the world. You feel disoriented. Sometimes you feel like you’re dying.

I don’t think it can actually kill you, but it’s disabling because your are so overcome with fear and you feel like you’re going crazy.

The big problem with a panic disorder if you don’t get it treated is that it can get worse and progress into other psychological problems. It can lead to agoraphobia, where you might be afraid to even leave the house. Thank God I never got to that point…but I can see how people can wind up that way.

If you are seeing a psychiatrist right now, you need to tell them what’s going on. A panic disorder can be an entirely different thing from whatever problems you have with bipolar depression. An anti-anxiety medication might help. I went back to counseling and I’m taking Xanax right now, and that has definitely helped. I don’t get that weird feeling of "doom" anymore and it’s been a while since I’ve had a full blown panic attack.

I don’t think a panic attack in itself can kill you…but all that stress definitely can’t be good for you long term.

By the way, I’m not saying that medication is the answer for everything, or that you’ll have to take pills for the rest of your life. I’m just saying that right now, you need to get this under control so you don’t feel miserable and you can get your life back on track.

Has your dog ever urinated in his/her crate from anxiety???

Hi,

Separation anxiety almost always includes one or more of the following behaviors when you’re not at home:

    * Destructive behaviors, such as chewing pillows or furniture, mutilating plants, or relentless scratching at doors and windows
* Constant barking, whining, or howling
* Urinating or defecating indoors
* Intense, persistent pacing
* Attempting to "escape" a room or crate to the point of self-injury
* Physiological responses, such as dilated pupils or excessive panting

Desensitization is the method most often used to treat separation anxiety, however. It entails gradually acclimating your dog to your departure. It is strongly recommended that you seek help from a reputable behaviorist if you think desensitization is your best treatment option.

What causes anxiety?

What causes anxiety?
Anxiety is often triggered by stress in our lives. Some of us are more vulnerable to anxiety than others, but even those who become anxious easily can learn to manage it well. We can also make ourselves anxious with "negative self-talk" - a habit of always telling ourselves the worst will happen.
How will I recognize anxiety?

As well as feeling apprehensive and worried (possibly without knowing why), you may experience some of the following physical symptoms:
Tense muscles
Trembling
Churning stomach
Nausea
Diarrhoea
Headache
Backache
Heart palpitations
Numbness or "pins and needles" in arms, hands or legs
Sweating/flushing
It is easy to mistake symptoms of anxiety for physical illness and become worried that you might be suffering a heart attack or stroke. This of course increases anxiety.
When is anxiety a problem?
We all become anxious from time to time. It becomes a problem when it interferes with life in the absence of real threat, or goes on too long after the danger has past.

I have been diagnosed with depression and more recently anxiety and was prescribed Celexa. I don’t feel as depressed on it, but continue to have anxiety issues. I wakeup at about 4:30 most morning shaking and have a upset stomach. When I get up, its so bad that I end up nauseated and usually throw up. Is there a better medicine out there for anxiety relief?

I go to a support grooup for people with depression, bipolar disorder, etc. One of the first things I learned is that a med that can be great for one person can be terrible for another. We all react differently to psych drugs.

The best a psychiatrist can do is make an estimated guess of which drug will help the most. The nausea and throwing up is obviously a sign you are not on the right drug. Tell your doctor to get your dosage changed or, more likely, get switched to another medication.

Remember that bad side effects often hit a person early in treatment and can lessen or completely disappear in a month or less. Celexa and other SSRIs (like lexapro, zoloft, prozac, etc.) often take 3 to 5 or 6 weeks before the positive effects kick in. So you have to be patient.

Be sure you are seeing a psychiatrist, not a general practitioner for psych meds. A psychiatrist has much more knowledge than other doctors on psych problems and meds.

Finally, research shows that psychotherapy plus meds is generally more effective than meds alone or therapy alone. I wish you the best.
