How are panic attacks and panic disorder treated?

December 4th, 2009

Hi, I was wondering if anybody knows if there’s any over the counter supplements that can be used to treat panic attacks and/or depression? I would love to discover some sort of supplements or medicine that would help prevent social anxieties specifically. Maybe I should find some sort of breathing exercises to help keep my heart rate down.

If you’re looking for over the counter supplements to cope with the panic attacks, try St Johns Wort and Omega 3 Fish oil. These 2 supplements have shown to play an important role in brain function.

Definitely breathing exercises. I had a therapist suggest that I do deep breathing while meditating on something that makes me happy (I chose the dog I used to have) to deal with a panic attack head on.

Chamomile tea is great stuff, probably not strong enough for a full-blown panic attack, though.

If possible, get a pet - I got a cat and my panic attacks dropped from 1-2 per week to 1 in 2 months.

During an attack your breaths become faster so you need to slow them down to control the attack.

Doing something like yoga can help to develop the control of your breathing you need. But just practicing doing slow deep breaths should help as you can go back to this practice state when you have an actual attack.

Breathing exercises are great for short term relief and should be used. If you get a chance to check out bestpanicattacktreatments.com on the website I have a reviewed several panic/anxiety treatment programs that have been very successful. Take a look and good luck with your situation. It can be tough but treatable.
